If your service desk still runs on Cherwell, the calendar isn't on your side. Ivanti has confirmed that Cherwell Service Management reaches end of life on 31 December 2026, and that's now only about 12 weeks away. Plenty of teams have been planning to "deal with Cherwell next quarter", and next quarter is here.

The good news is that there's still time to move properly. You won't have time to overthink it, though. This guide explains what Cherwell's end of life means, what happens if you do nothing, and how to pick a Cherwell replacement you can actually get live before the deadline.

TL;DR

  • Cherwell end of life is 31 December 2026. From then on, Ivanti stops all support, patches and security fixes.

  • Cloud customers face the biggest risk. Unsupported Cherwell cloud instances can be shut down 30 days after the renewal date.

  • On-premise systems will keep running, but unpatched. That's a growing security and compliance risk.

  • You can wait, or you can migrate. Staying on Cherwell only delays the move. Moving to Ivanti's replacement is a full migration too, so compare it with Cherwell alternatives such as HaloITSM, Freshservice and Jira Service Management.

  • It's not too late to migrate. Go live with a clean baseline before the deadline and bring over only the data you need. Improve your processes once you're safely live.

How did we get here?

Cherwell was a popular choice for mid-sized IT teams who wanted ITIL-aligned service management without the price tag of an enterprise platform. In March 2021, Ivanti completed its acquisition of Cherwell. Then, on 31 October 2023, Ivanti announced the official end-of-life date and started steering customers towards its own platform, Ivanti Neurons for ITSM.

Since then, support has been winding down in stages. Older releases lost support first. As we reach the final months, only the most recent versions are still covered.

What does Cherwell end of life actually mean?

"End of life" can sound vague, so here's what it means in practice:

  • No more patches or security fixes. Any vulnerability found after 31 December 2026 stays open.

  • No vendor support. If something breaks, you're on your own.

  • Cloud customers risk being switched off. According to InvGate's EoL breakdown, Cherwell cloud environments on unsupported versions can be shut down 30 days after the renewal date if no action is taken.

  • On-premise installs keep running, but unsupported. Your system may still work on 1 January, but it becomes an unpatched application sitting on top of your ticket history, asset data and user records.

For regulated organisations, that last point matters. Running unsupported software that handles personal data is hard to defend in an audit, a cyber insurance renewal or a Cyber Essentials assessment.

Your options: stay put, or migrate away

  1. Do nothing (for now). On-premise customers can technically keep going. But you're taking on security risk every day, and you'll still need to migrate eventually, just under more pressure.

  1. Migrate to a Cherwell alternative. Ivanti's suggested route is its own Neurons platform. That's still a full migration to a new platform, not an upgrade. If you're re-platforming anyway, it makes sense to pick the tool that best fits your team today. The three Cherwell alternatives we see most often are:

  • HaloITSM: a strong fit for teams who liked Cherwell's configurability. It offers full ITIL-aligned service management, deep reporting and all-inclusive licensing, and it was named a Challenger in the 2026 Gartner® Magic Quadrant™.

  • Freshservice: modern, intuitive and quick to set up, which makes it a popular pick when the deadline is tight.

  • Jira Service Management: the natural choice if your development or project teams already work in Jira and Confluence. Everything stays on one platform.

Is it too late to migrate before 31 December?

Not if you're realistic about scope. The trick is to separate getting off Cherwell from perfecting your processes:

  1. Assess quickly. List your ticket types, workflows, integrations, SLAs and the data you actually need to keep.

  2. Go live with a solid baseline. Rebuild your core processes cleanly, rather than copying every customisation from the last ten years.

  3. Migrate the data that matters. Bring over open tickets, assets and the history you need for reporting or compliance. Archive the rest.

  4. Cut over, then improve. Once you're live and supported, you can redesign processes without a deadline hanging over you.

This approach works. When CHC Helicopter moved from ServiceNow to HaloITSM with BDQ, the core migration took two months. The platform supports 2,800 staff, with an estimated licensing saving of around 70%. CloudGuard, another BDQ customer, estimated that an in-house implementation would take 6 months to complete. In contrast, BDQ completed the same implementation in just 3 weeks, delivering the full solution much faster.

What about your historical data?

Don't let Cherwell hold your records hostage. Before you switch it off, agree how long you need to keep ticket history for audits, contracts or regulation, then either migrate it or export it to an accessible archive. Structured data migration tooling makes this far less painful than it used to be. It's covered as a fixed-price step in our HaloITSM migration service.
